Sudden intensity changes, such as immediately sprinting hard without warming up, abruptly stress your cardiovascular system. Drink sufficient water before, during and after your training. As a rule of thumb: 500 ml of water 2 hours before training and 150-200 ml every 15-20 minutes during exertion.
Pay attention to your breathing during exertion. Breathe deeply and regularly, especially during heavy exercises. Avoid holding your breath during strength exercises. Preferably train in cool conditions and wear breathable clothing. Don’t eat heavy meals within 2-3 hours before your training, but ensure sufficient fuel with a light snack 30-60 minutes beforehand.
What do you do if exertional headache still occurs?
Stop the activity immediately, find a cool place and drink water slowly if exertional headache occurs. Cooling the head and neck, combined with relaxation techniques, helps relieve the symptoms. Medical help is necessary for severe or persistent headaches.
Sit or lie down in a cool, quiet room. Place a cold compress on your forehead or neck to make the blood vessels contract. Drink small sips of water to counteract dehydration, but avoid large quantities at once. Gently massage your temples and neck muscles to reduce tension.
Warning signs that require immediate medical attention are: sudden, very severe headache, headache with fever, nausea with headache, double vision, confusion or neck stiffness. These symptoms may indicate more serious conditions. Headaches that persist for more than a few hours after stopping exercise also deserve medical evaluation.
